Eat Like a Local: Authentic Vietnamese Cuisine & Community Building in Da Nang

At Break Outwards, we believe that one of the most authentic ways to experience a culture is through its food. Not the polished tourist versions, but the genuine local establishments where residents gather, share stories, and enjoy their traditional cuisine.
Launching “Eat Like a Local”
This belief inspired our newest community initiative: Eat Like a Local — a series that takes location-independent explorers beyond the tourist trail to discover hidden culinary gems that only locals frequent. Our mission is simple: connect travelers with authentic food experiences while building meaningful connections within our nomadic community.
Last night marked our inaugural gathering in Da Nang, Vietnam, and though small in number, it was rich in experience and cultural immersion.
Our First Culinary Adventure
At the recommendation of our local guide and community builder Lee Chi (on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/lethichisupportenglish) , three of us ventured to a neighborhood spot renowned for its Bánh Xèo — crispy Vietnamese savory pancakes filled with bean sprouts, pork, and shrimp.
Upon arrival at 7:00 PM, we were immediately enveloped in the atmosphere of authenticity — plastic stools, bustling servers, and the sizzling sound of pancakes hitting hot pans. No English menus, no tourist pricing — just real Vietnamese dining culture.

The Culinary Experience
Lee guided us through the proper eating technique: taking the delicate pancake, wrapping it with fresh herbs and vegetables in rice paper, and dipping it into a flavorful sauce before taking that perfect bite. It’s a hands-on, communal eating style that naturally encourages conversation and shared experience.
Our small group — myself, Lee, and our friend Bo from https://cloudatlas.club/ (one of the collaborating sponsors of the event) — spent the evening exchanging stories, discussing cultural differences in dining habits, and plotting future culinary expeditions across Da Nang. The restaurant’s resident cat made occasional appearances, wandering between tables and adding to the authentic local charm.
Accessibility for All
One of the most surprising aspects for newcomers to Vietnam is the affordability of these authentic experiences. Our entire meal for three people totaled just 210,000 VND (approximately $8.40 USD), making this form of cultural immersion accessible for travelers on any budget.
Building Community One Meal at a Time
What began as a simple dinner evolved into something more meaningful — a blueprint for regular weekly gatherings that combine cultural exploration with community building. These shared experiences create bonds that extend beyond the typical superficial interactions travelers often have in new places.
“Food brings people together in a way that few other experiences can,” Lee explained as we finished our meal. “When you eat like a local, you understand a culture in ways that tourist activities never reveal.”
The Future of Eat Like a Local
Based on the success of our first gathering, we’re excited to announce that Eat Like a Local will become a weekly event in Da Nang, with plans to expand to other Break Outwards locations globally. Each event will feature a different local establishment, focusing on authentic dishes and the stories behind them.
As our community of location-independent explorers grows, these culinary experiences provide the perfect foundation for meaningful connections while honoring and supporting local cultures and businesses.

The world is our office. Curiosity is our currency. And sometimes, that currency buys the most delicious Bánh Xèo you’ve ever tasted.
